Amazon is updating the settings for automatic removals for unsellable inventory. Starting June 9, 2025, Amazon will dispose of unsellable inventory returned by customers after a period of 23 days, unless a different option is specified in the account. In the settings, sellers can choose to dispose, liquidate, or return the items. The aim is to lower storage fees, improve the inventory performance index, and make room for sellable goods.
What do sellers need to consider?
Activate automatic settings: In Seller Central, under “Settings → Fulfillment by Amazon → Automatic settings for unsellable inventory,” you should define whether unsellable items should be liquidated, disposed of, or returned in the future.
Refurbish instead of losing value: A removal is worthwhile if quality control or repair is possible; removal costs per unit are often lower than the margin loss from disposal.
Reduce customer returns: Precise product descriptions, detailed size charts, as well as high-quality images and Q&A sections reduce incorrect purchases. Return reasons should be systematically analyzed to quickly address recurring defects and sustainably lower the return rate.
